Equipment

  • Blender or Food Processor: To blend the watermelon and other ingredients into a smooth mixture.
  • Freezer-Safe Container: For storing the sorbet mixture while it freezes.
  • Measuring Cups and Spoons: To measure out ingredients like sweetener, lemon or lime juice, and salt.
  • Ice cream scoop or spoon: For serving the sorbet once it’s fully frozen.
  • Shallow Dish (Optional) If you prefer faster freezing, a shallow dish will help the mixture freeze evenly.
  • Ice Cream Maker (Optional) For a smoother, creamier texture if you prefer to use an ice cream maker instead of freezing it manually.

Ingredients

  • 4-5 cup Fresh Watermelon (about 1 medium-sized watermelon, cut into cubes)
  • ¼-½ cup Sugar or Sweetener (Optional) (adjust based on sweetness preference)
  • 1-2 tbsp Lemon or Lime Juice (freshly squeezed)
  • Salt – A pinch(Optional)
  • ¼-½ cup Water (Optional) (if needed for blending consistency)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Watermelon:
Cut a medium-sized, seedless watermelon into cubes, removing any seeds. You’ll need about 4-5 cups of cubed watermelon.
  • Blend the Ingredients:
Place the watermelon cubes in a blender or food processor. Add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of sugar (or sweetener of choice), 1-2 tablespoons of freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice, and a pinch of salt (optional). Blend until smooth.
  • Adjust Consistency:
If the mixture is too thick, add 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water to thin it out. Blend again until everything is well combined and smooth.
  • Freeze the Mixture:
Pour the blended watermelon mixture into a freezer-safe container. Cover and freeze for 4-6 hours, stirring every 30 minutes for the first 1-2 hours to prevent ice crystals from forming.
  • Serve and Enjoy:
Once the sorbet has firmed up, scoop it into bowls or cones. Let it sit for a few minutes to soften slightly before serving. Enjoy the refreshing, sweet treat!

Notes

  1. Sweetness Adjustment:
    • Watermelons can vary in sweetness, so be sure to taste the mixture before freezing. If your watermelon is very sweet, you may not need to add as much sugar or sweetener. Alternatively, you can use natural sweeteners like honey, agave syrup, or stevia.
  2. Blending Consistency:
    • The consistency of the watermelon can vary. If the mixture is too thick to blend smoothly, add a small amount of water (about 1/4 cup). Adjust the water based on your preferred thickness.
  3. Freezing Tips:
    • Stir the sorbet every 30 minutes during the first couple of hours of freezing to avoid ice crystals forming and achieve a smoother texture. If you have an ice cream maker, this will help achieve an even creamier consistency.
  4. Storage:
    • Keep the sorbet in an airtight container in the freezer. It will last for about 1-2 weeks. If it becomes too hard to scoop, let it sit out for a few minutes before serving to soften slightly.
  5. Alternative Fruits:
    • Feel free to experiment with other fruits like strawberries, raspberries, or pineapple for a unique flavor twist. You can also add fresh mint for a refreshing herbal note.
  6. Serving Tips:
    • For easier serving, allow the sorbet to soften at room temperature for a minute or two before scooping. This will help it reach the perfect, scoopable texture.
  7. No Ice Cream Maker? No Problem:
    • While using an ice cream maker will provide a smoother texture, it’s not necessary. Stirring the sorbet every 30 minutes during freezing will help break up ice crystals and give it a creamy consistency even without an ice cream maker.
Following these notes will help you make a delicious, refreshing watermelon sorbet every time!
